Church Record Sunday: Religion in American History

A website that might be of use in learning more about religion and its place in American history can be found at Divining America: Religion in American History at http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/tserve/divam.htm. This website is part of a National Humanities Center TeacherServe project. It provides essays by scholars on different topics related to American religion from the 17th century through the 20th century.

While this is not a standard genealogy site with information about individuals, it will provide you with information that will help you better understand your ancestor's place in time.

Some of the articles about American religion in the 19th century include:
  • Roman Catholics & Immigration
  • The American Jewish Experience
  • Religion in the Civil War: The Northern Side
  • African American Religion
  • Foreign Missionary Movement
Essays about American religion in the 17th and 18th centuries can be found at http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/tserve/eighteen.htm. The 19th century can be found at http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/tserve/nineteen.htm and the 20th century can be found at http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/tserve/twenty.htm. Each centuries 'page' also includes additional website links to accompany each essay.
