Women's History Month 2019: Alumni Directories

Let's take another look at your ancestor's school life. There are records and documents available for the school years, but what about after the cap and gown are put away?

Alumni Directories exist for high schools and colleges. It's not unusual to find alumni directories that include a large year span (even decades or more). These are not the sort of directories that are published yearly.

What information might you find? Contact information, women's maiden names, spouse's and possibly children's names, education (degrees earned), and occupation. There may also be a note if the person is deceased.

Be careful as you search, especially if you are using an index. In the alumni directory for my high school, I'm listed under two different names, one of which is misspelled. It's not apparent in either listing that it's the same person. My brother, who also went to that school, isn't listed at all. Remember that these directories rely on alumni to provide the information. If the person didn't respond or the directory committee couldn't locate them,  they might not be included.
