He was committed in 1872 and died in the asylum in 1905. I have done extensive research on this topic and would suggest that NGS Magazine will be publishing my article in the near future about where records can be obtained of the insane in public repositories and in court protected states. Illinois State Genealogical Society and the Southern CA GS have my webinar--"Finding Dirk: Insanity in the 19th Century" behind their member wall.
Some excellent resources include the website http://www.asylumsproject.org and the Newberry Library. If you want to know more about women in asylums I recommend:
Pouba, Katherine & Ashley Tianen. “Lunacy in the 19th Century: Women’s Admission to Asylums in the United States of America.” Oshkosh Scholar. 1 (April 2006): 95-103.
An easy read about compliance law:
Skloot, Rebecca. If you know the church where the ancestor attended you may want to start with the FamilySearch Catalog or do some digging to see where that particular church archives their records. Some churches do have a regional or even a national archive that might be of help. Aside from ...Hi Gena, thanks for this information. Aside from looking for a female ancestor, I'd like to use church records to help identify town of origin in the "old country". Do you have a recommendation on how to prioritize an approach to church record research. Maybe going directly online instead of checking first with local churches in the U.S. isn't the best course. I'm pretty confident of the religion. Thanks for any guidance. He was a well known separatist, but he was also the kind of guy who always seemed to try and get away with as much as he could get away with--including attempting to collect on slave debt post-war by framing the suit as a fraud case rather than a slave debt case. It went all the way to the state supreme court, and he (rightfully) lost.kinvestigationshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00992569878493786233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12077223.post-88985672836598374952018-03-11T14:09:13.914-07:002018-03-11T14:09:13.914-07:00Thanks for the shout out, Gena! Thanks for the shout out, Gena!Miriam Robbinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12021845886261585678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12077223.post-47941444027835994032017-07-14T18:45:13.646-07:002017-07-14T18:45:13.646-07:00Gena, I have nominated you for the Blogger Recogni...Gena, I have nominated you for the Blogger Recognition Award. https://mam-massouthernfamily.blogspot.com/2017/07/blogger-recognition-award.html. I haven't watched the presentation but I wanted to let you know about the largest genealogical library in Arizona - The West Valley Genealogical Society in Youngtown, AZ. We acquired over 1,000 items from the collection that was disposed of by the state when they dismantled the Arizona State Genealogical library. Part of that collection included 27 books of obituaries which we are in the process of cataloging and digitizing. Our website is www.azwvgs.org. We currently have over 500 active members; I am the membership registrar.
