Women's History Month 2022: Relish A New Way

In this second week of Women's History Month, we are looking at books that will give you ideas for writing your female ancestor's life.

Title: Relish: My Life in the Kitchen

Author: Lucy Knisley

Publisher: First Second Books

Synopsis:

"Lucy Knisley loves food. The daughter of a chef and a gourmet, this talented young cartoonist comes by her obsession honestly. In her forthright, thoughtful, and funny memoir, Lucy traces key episodes in her life thus far, framed by what she was eating at the time and lessons learned about food, cooking, and life. Each chapter is bookended with an illustrated recipe—many of them treasured family dishes, and a few of them Lucy's original inventions." (author's website)

Why You Need This Book:

I know this is different. A graphic novel? What does that have to do with telling about your female ancestor's life?

Not everyone is a reader (I know, I can't believe it either). So I like the idea of a graphic novel as a unique way to tell a family history story. Now, we all aren't artists, so what do you do? Maybe substitute a lot of images. Short paragraphs. Make it easy and enjoyable. I like graphic novels because they can make even non-readers interested. Isn't that what we want? We want our family to be interested in our female ancestors.

The author takes her food history and illustrates it but what about taking one aspect of your ancestor's life and adding a lot of images to tell the story? What about maybe finding someone to illustrate it (a student?). Family History Books don't all have to look the same.
