Women's History Month 2023: Aprons

Yesterday, I posted about fashion. I provided some prompts and suggestions for writing about what she wore. I think this piece of social history is a great way to add context to her life. Today, I want to discuss another piece of fashion that many people have cherished memories of, aprons.

Perhaps your grandmother or mom wore one. Aprons were vital accessories because they acted as a guard against spilling and ruining clothes. They were part of her "work uniform." Aprons evolved over time but are not generally considered a must-have accessory today.

Have you looked at your photos to see if any of the women wore an apron? Have you inherited one? Have you considered how aprons changed over time? Some questions you could pursue are:

  • What women in your family wore an apron?
  • What types of aprons did they wear?
  • Did they wear aprons every time they cooked or cleaned or only for certain occasions?
  • Did they have aprons for specific occasions?
  • Did they sew their own aprons?
