Women's History Month 2019: Club Directories

What clubs or organizations did your female ancestor belong to? Their membership can mean a record trail that will help you learn more about their lives. Membership records, scrapbooks, ephemera,  directories, and other documents related to a group can be found in libraries, archives and museums. Utilize resources like ArchiveGrid  and other archive catalogs.

Not sure what organizations your ancestor could have belonged to? Consider activities that their husband and brothers took part in and then look into female auxiliaries. Research groups attached to their church or religion. Once you have an idea of what organizations they may have belonged to, continue your research by looking for collections housed at libraries and archives. Not sure what types of organizations might have existed during her time? Consult local histories and city directories for information about organizations.

Type of organizations to search for include:

  • Political
  • Religious
  • Benevolent  and Social Causes
  • Academic/Educational
  • Ethnic
  • Occupational/Professional/Labor Union
  • Fraternal
  • Heritage
